{"id":4150,"date":"2010-12-20T14:59:33","date_gmt":"2010-12-20T14:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.muellerundschindler.com\/shop\/?post_type=product&#038;p=4150"},"modified":"2020-02-18T10:33:58","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T10:33:58","slug":"rudolf-von-ems-world-chronicle-der-stricker-charlemagne","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/old.muellerundschindler.com\/en\/product\/rudolf-von-ems-world-chronicle-der-stricker-charlemagne\/","title":{"rendered":"Rudolf von Ems: World Chronicle &#038; Der Stricker: Charlemagne"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The miniatures and text pages preserved in this fragment were cut out of a manuscript which must have been much more extensive, but any other traces of the original contents have not been found.<\/p>\n<p>Two well-known and <strong>popular epics from the period of the Staufer emperors<\/strong> have been united here, the <em>Weltchronik<\/em> by Rudolf von Ems and <em>Karl der Grosse <\/em>by Der Stricker. <strong>Rudolf von Ems<\/strong>, whose literary activity falls into the period between 1220\/30 and 1250, wrote his World Chronicle at the end of his creative period. Writing in verse form in German, he recounts events from the creation of the world up to King Solomon; the unfinished work was intended to be brought up to his own time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Der Stricker<\/strong>, about whose life we know little, was one of the <strong>wandering poets<\/strong>: one of the first truly documented professional poets of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> century. His work comprises verse novels and farcical verse in which he proves himself to be a master of novella-like vignettes. His epic <em>Karl der Grosse<\/em>, written around 1220, brought him the most success. As early as the 12<sup>th<\/sup> century, <strong>Charlemagne<\/strong> became the central figure of a distinct genre of <strong>heroic epic<\/strong> combined with the saga of the hero Roland. The historical background of the work is primarily Charlemagne\u2019s Spanish campaign in 778, when he crossed the Pyrenees to free Spain from the Saracens.<\/p>\n<p>Both works have been handed down in numerous manuscripts which from the very beginning were illustrated with miniatures. The present fragment comes from the Lake Constance area; artistically, the illustrations belong to the group related to the famous Manesse <em>Minnesang <\/em>manuscript. Scenes full of lyrical beauty and dramatic power are painted in brilliant colours and placed on gold ground. Genuine gold of 23 \u00bd carats was used for the facsimile and applied by hand according to the principles of medieval gilding methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bibliographical Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Facsimile<\/em>: 46 pages with 23 whole pages of hand-gilded miniatures (genuine gold, 23 \u00bd carats). Two pages with librarian\u2019s remarks, for example by Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Format: 19 x 28 cm (7.5 x 11 in). Embossed leather binding front and back.<\/p>\n<p><em>Commentary<\/em>: about 60 pages. Extensive introduction and description of all miniatures by Wolfgang Irtenkauf. Ten illustrations. Binding of hand-made paper.
