Looking at the sky in a dazzling trip to the stars<\/h2>\n

From time immemorial, the starry sky has fascinated and excited mankind. For this reason, astronomy<\/strong> is one of\u00a0the oldest sciences of all – myths, rites, ruler cults, cultic worship of the stars, the development of calendar\u00a0systems and more generally the determination of time were linked to this science, which was also always\u00a0accompanied by a mystical component. One of the most beautiful astronomical manuscripts is the Aratea\u00a0Vaticana<\/strong>, which shows star constellations and images in 42 magnificent golden miniatures.<\/p>\n

42 fascinating star constellations<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The manuscript was commissioned at the court\u00a0of King Ferdinand I in Naples. It is particularly\u00a0colourful and richly decorated and contains 42\u00a0miniatures on 100 pages. The work came into\u00a0the collection of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini in\u00a0the 16th century and was subsequently incorporated into the holdings of the Biblioteca\u00a0Apostolica Vaticana<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 of which it still forms the core \u2013 along with the entire Barberini collection\u00a0under Pope Leo XIII in 1901.\u00a0The noble original manuscript was made on the\u00a0best parchment, on which in dark ink and\u00a0single-column in humanistic cursive the text is\u00a0found with numerous decorated and gilded\u00a0initials.<\/p>\n

A panopticon of the starry sky<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The manuscript includes the prose version of\u00a0the Aratea translation by Germanicus<\/strong>, the\u00a0Naturalis historia by Pliny the Elder<\/strong>, and De\u00a0Astronomia by Hyginus<\/strong>. It begins with a frontispiece, followed by a magnificent pictorial page\u00a0with a map of the heavens. Subsequently, the\u00a0entire work shows detailed and lovingly\u00a0executed miniatures throughout, framed and\u00a0separated from the text. In these miniatures, the\u00a0celestial bodies are colourfully and expressively depicted. The influence of Arabic and GrecoRoman iconography is clearly evident in the\u00a0manuscript\u2018s magnificent depictions.\u00a0The codex is undoubtedly a gem of Italian\u00a0Renaissance art<\/strong> and a quite exceptional masterpiece of book art.<\/p>\n

A famous text that has been studied for centuries<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The teaching poem of Aratos of Soloi, written\u00a0around 370 BC, was for centuries one of the\u00a0most popular texts in the field of astronomical\u00a0understanding and knowledge transmission.\u00a0His text Phaenomena<\/em>, written in hexameters,\u00a0describes the starry sky, the planets and weather\u00a0signs and links them to the myths of the stars.\u00a0Its popularity can be seen in its reception and\u00a0commentary; for example, the text was translated into Latin by Cicero and then again by\u00a0Germanicus and Avienus, which shows its\u00a0unbroken impact throughout the Middle Ages<\/strong>.\u00a0However, it reached the peak of its dissemination in the process of the writing of numerous\u00a0manuscripts during the Italian Renaissance in\u00a0the 15th century. One of these magnificent\u00a0manuscripts is the Aratea Vaticana, in which\u00a0the famous text is particularly richly illustrated.<\/p>\n

Golden stars, shining colours<\/strong><\/h2>\n

True to the original facsimile edition<\/strong> of the manuscript Barb. Lat. 76<\/strong>\u00a0in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana<\/a>\u00a0in Rome. A splendorous decorative\u00a0page, the famous planisphere and 39\u00a0golden miniatures as well as numerous initials illustrate the phantastic\u00a0Aratea on 100 sheets of 23.2 x 15.1\u00a0cm each. The original cover, a richly embroidered velvet cover with the\u00a0coat of arms of the Barberini, has\u00a0been exactly reproduced. A magnificent box protects the precious facsimile volume.<\/p>\n
